The Story of Life IsCurrent

It started with a dream…

In 2010, I was living in Corvallis, Oregon working at the local Waldorf school.

I’ll never forget the dream I had one night in Fall—I floated down the entire Mississippi River on a rust-colored inner-tube. I started my journey in Minnesota, hopping fences and meandering through narrow dirt paths lined by tall grasses and trees. Finally, I arrived at the starting point of the Mississippi, and began floating down the river as though it was the most ordinary, matter-of-fact thing to do.

As I floated downriver, I vacillated between terror and awe as I felt the force of the current careening me this way and that.

Eventually, I even experienced moments of blissful peace as I stayed in the moment, flowing with the current. It took many days to reach New Orleans, and along the way I experienced the imprint of every bend, every rapid, every expanse of blue sky overhead.

I journaled the entire dream the next morning, my mind filled to the brim with the experience of converging with this mighty force. After work, I went to the local co-op for dinner. As I sat in the dining-area I overheard two wisewomen talking about dreams and how they act as our own internal guidance system, comparing it to GPS.

Before I knew it, I interjected, “I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation. I had the most vivid dream last night.”

They were delighted by this and invited me to sit with them. I shared about my dream and the profound impact that it had on me, hoping to glean from their wisdom.

One of the women asked me, “If you were to give this dream a title, what would it be?”

I looked up and thought for a moment, “Mississippi Mud.”

The other woman laughed and said, “That’s the name of the coffee they’re featuring here today.”

“Really?!” I said smiling.

Then she asked, “If you were to make a bumper sticker for this dream, what would it say?”

“Life is current,” I responded instantly.

“Ooh, I just got chills!”

I still remember parts of that dream as clearly as I experienced it in 2010. The message has remained with me just as steadfastly:

Life is current.

And so, as I write this ten years later in 2020, my dream has acted as my loyal internal guidance system, leading me to this point—sharing my work and the essence of this dream with you.
